So many people cherish this movie for its acting, storyline, moral, or intense drama. I also heard a lot of stories about people shedding tears or full out crying, and it is undoubtedly something to get teary eyed on. Others are highly motivated by it, for example, right before we played a football game a friend of mine made us watch the movie, in the back of a truck on a very small TV, hoping that that would get our spirits up and win the game. With all that in mind, I do not see this movie as a great accomplishment in the film industry. I saw it as a cliché feel good movie that simply allows people to feel somewhat empowered to accomplish whatever they would like to. As good as that may sound, it is still temporary and disappears after a short while. Although it is supposed be based on a true story, it was still somewhat distorted from what exactly happened, as you can see by going to this movie review. Then again, distortion is natural for any true story that is being made into a movie. Now I do not want to come off as in any way opposed to this movie, its just that I do not believe it is different from any other movie that brings out the character's spirit and wins the hearts of the audience. The tagline for the move is pretty corny too, "When people say dreams don't come true, tell them about Rudy"; I mean come on!

This week, “Techies” reviewed Rudy, a film based on a true-life story. The film, directed by David Anspaugh, was released in 1993, yet is set mostly in the early 1970s. Rudy is a middle child from a large Catholic family who has always wanted to play football for Notre Dame. He has always been quite small compared to his classmates, but he led his high school football team in tackles. After graduation, Rudy, just like his brothers, went to work for the local steel mill. After the death of his best friend Pete, Rudy decides to head for South Bend and enrolls in the community college. Eventually, after two years, is accepted to Notre Dame and walks on the football team as a practice defenseman. Rudy is finally able to dress for the last game of the year (due to his teammates generosity), and goes in for the last two plays of the game, ending with a quarterback sack.

I disagree with Ayyad, and I find Rudy a very heart-warming film. Yes, it is quite cheesy, and the “win one for the Gipper” quote has become quite cliché as well, but I still enjoy it, and the film really does have an important message. Basically, the movie is saying that with enough heart, it’s possible to accomplish anything. I personally relate this movie to my father’s own experiences; he was a high school football player who was unable to go to college for financial reasons. Unlike Rudy, my dad didn’t save up money to go, but instead received a respectable job and worked his way up to a high position in order to support himself on his own.

The whole premise of this film is that it gives people hope. We can see this everyday, especially at college. It may seem trite, but I actually think watching this film slightly boosted my hope for finals next week. Hey, if Rudy could sack an all-star quarterback, why can’t I successfully pass calculus? Focusing on college, much of the requirement for students to make the 4.0 they want is just effort. At college, there are so many distractions and other affairs undergraduates would rather be attending to; often it just takes buckling down and opening the book. Rudy emphasizes this need, in an indirect manner, of course. I especially found it moving when Fortune tells Rudy, “you're 5 foot nothin', 100 and nothin', and you have nearly a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football team in the land for 2 years. And you're gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself.” This is something very important that is often forgotten by college students, nobody’s opinion matters except for your own. Your goals should be for you, and not for anyone else.

In conclusion, I think Rudy is quite the self-esteem booster. It is a low key motion picture, which focuses on what it takes to succeed in this life… heart. I’m glad “Techies” chose this as their final film.

Entertainment Rating: 8
Reality Rating: 8

As a sidenote, Rudy is currently a motivational speaker, go figure. : )

Ok, I changed my mind. Rudy and the Revenge of the Nerds are my two favorites out of these college movies. I've always heard about the story of Rudy, but some how I thought that the movie would be lame. However, I found the movie to be quite touching. It really made me realize how lucky I am to be able to get into and afford a top-notch college. After watching Rudy work in the coal mines for four years, leave with only the money in his pocket and succeed at getting into Notre Dame, I felt pretty lazy. This movie also made me feel like I am not working hard enough and taking advantage of the opportunities I have to get an education. Rudy also made me want to go for my dreams instead of just thinking about them. This movie really teaches you that dreams can be accomplished, but, it is only you that is going to make it become a reality. I think this movie will either make you teary or get you highly motivated.

Rudy is a movie about a boy who has a dream and no one believes that he can accomplish this dream. To be none other than cliche, he is a small boy in a big mans world. He does not see his size as something to look bad upon, he puts forth all his efforts and his goal in life is to play football for Notre Dame. Rudy played and watched football all of his life, everyone kind of just laughed and shrugged it off when he told them of his dream. This obstacle did not stop Rudy from striving for his dream. He worked harder and longer than anyone else. He put all his heart and sweat into his playing. When Rudy arrives at Notre Dame and he tries out for football he is made fun of even by the coach for being as little as he is; no one thought that he was big enough to play without getting seriously injured. However, the team and as well as the coach soon realized what a heart the kid had allowed him on to the team. Even though he was allowed on to the team that did not neccessarily mean that he was given a chance to play. In the last game Rudy was given his shot and he made the biggest play of the game and everyone cheered for him. He realized that after all his hard work and persistance his dream had finally come true.

The movie is a feel good movie, one that can only be watched every so often. I like the movie because it does show that dreams do come true. However, the movie in my opinion is really kind of corny. I'm glad that he got his wish, it is a good movie for children to watch; to show them that hard work does pay off and that the good guy does win.

One of the greatest moments of my recent life at Tech was watching Rudy take down that all-American quarterback in the last few seconds of the game. It was so inspiring to know that even though Rudy knew that he wasn’t going to get to affect the outcome of the game when he went in at the end he still gave it his best. All throughout the movie Rudy keeps asking himself if he has done all he can and that really is the message in the movie. Once you can sit back and look at a situation and say to yourself, “I’ve given it my all. I’ve done my best,” then no matter what the outcome may be you can be proud of yourself. And that is what Rudy finally realizes thanks to guidance from Fortune. He finally realizes that his entire life he has been trying to make others be proud of him and respect him when all he needed to do that entire time was to be proud of himself and his incredible accomplishments. He worked incredibly hard to achieve what he did. He gave it everything that he had, and he succeeded. Hopefully Rudy can serve as an example to me and to everyone else. Hopefully we all will put the same amount of passion into our dreams as Rudy did into his own. The tagline for the movie may be corny, but despite what Ayyad may say it is also incredible. The tagline is “When people say dreams don't come true, tell them about Rudy.”
