Well, this movie was definitely my favorite so far. I'm not saying that this was a high quality film; it was actually very cheesey. However, I always love stories where the underdog wins. In this particular film, the nerds (underdogs) beat the jocks in the homecoming games to be admitted into the greek system. The thought of nerds creating their own fraternity is not very realistic for college life today, but, worked for this movie. The jock-nerd relationship really reminded me of the relationship between Georgia Tech and our own bitter rivals, the University of Georgia. As most people know, we are considered the nerdy school and Georgia is considered the dumb jock school. (There are exceptions at Tech for this stereotype where you might find some smart jocks, however, as far as I'm concerned there is no exception in stereotypes for that other school.) At the end of Revenge of the Nerds, the Tri Lambdas battle against the Alpha Betas in the Homecoming games for admittance into the greek system. This battle also reminded me of the annual football "battle" between Tech and Georgia. However, this year the "battle" could be considered "Revenge of the Jocks/Idiots" because sadly we did not win the game. Maybe next year our football team can take a little time to watch Revenge of the Nerds before the blood battle. And hopefully, we will come out on top just like the Tri Lambdas.

This week’s movie Revenge of the Nerd’s is one of humor and prosperity. The movie came out in 1984 giving hope to nerds and scaring jocks around the country. The plot of the movie seems to be over realistic. It is hard to believe that on one campus, there is so much discrimination and violence from basically one fraternity, the jocks (Alpha Beta). Its also hard to believe that the fate of the nerds fraternity is in the hands of the biggest jock on campus. However, this makes for a great story line creating much drama for the nerds and comedy for the audience. Eventually the nerds overcome the jocks and win homecoming as well as win the hearts of the women on campus showing that good will beat evil in the end. I would not necessarily say that this is a must see movie, but it was good and if in the right mood its humor can be appreciated.

This week, “Techies” reviewed Revenge of the Nerds, directed by Jeff Kanew and released in 1984. The basic plot of the film revolves around the various cliques at Adams College, mainly the jocks and the nerds. As in any token clique film, the jocks of Alpha Beta are bent on taunting the nerds, and the nerds decide, as the title states, to get revenge. The nerds decide to develop their own fraternity, but need to be allowed into the Greek system (whose president is an Alpha Beta). Eventually one fraternity, Lamda Lamda Lamda tells the nerds if they can act like the other fraternities (read -> drink), they can join Tri-Lam. Ultimately a war breaks out between the jocks and the nerds, and the nerds’ persistence gets them accepted into Tri-Lam. With the quarterback as Greek President, the nerds decide the only way for Tri-Lam to achieve equality in the Greek System is to win the Homecoming Games. After all is said in done, in the end the nerds prosper by winning both Homecoming and the women of Adams.
I actually quite enjoyed this film, even though it was released before I was. The film was quite humorous, and I can understand why it has often been compared to Animal House (“Techies” first review). As for reality, I actually found some similarities between the film and true college life. While, as Ayyad stated, the film is sometimes unrealistic, but still enjoyable. Even if there were some jock conspiracy here at Tech to rid the campus of all the nerds, the only thing left would be management majors and tumbleweeds. At Georgia Tech, even the jocks would be attacking their inner nerd. As Gilbert states in the film, “no one will really be free until the nerd persecution ends.” There are virtually no cliques at Tech, from what I can determine, due to the fact that most people that attend an institution dubbed Georgia Tech would embrace their inner nerd. Another relationship I saw between the movie and life, was the fierce competition at Homecoming. During Homecoming Week (in the fall) and Greek Week (in the spring), there is a intense rivalry here at Tech as well. All the fraternities and sororities compete against one another for bragging rights. As in the film, there are traditional events such as a tricycle race (the Mini 500) and stage performances (Mock Rock), but there are also very unconventional events as well such, as in the film, arm wrestling and burping contests, and in real life Tug (tug-o-war) and Messy Mess Hall (shoving your face in various gooey substances).
In conclusion, I believe that Revenge of the Nerds is a funny, yet embellished view of college life. I can draw similarities from many of the previous films that “Techies” has watched. I can definitely see how many audience members have related this film to its predecessor Animal House. I was once again able to make vague parallels between real life and the film.

After searching in several blockbusters in my area, I was able to find a copy of Revenge of the Nerds One and Two. Apparently they come on one CD, most likely because of how long ago this movie was and the three sequels that followed. This movie was pretty funny, however, I would not go as for to say that it was hilarious. Whether it is realistic or not, I had a really hard time trying to decide. Nerds are a reality; nevertheless, I doubt there is such a strong resistance or discrimination against them. Adams College and its "jocks" seemed to be unrealistically powerful to begin with, especially when I saw the part where the jocks kick out the freshmen from their dorms and physically throw them out. College is the only place where a person sees so many people who could be labeled as "nerds", that is strictly from my own experience anyway. I am very sure that there is no sort of organization at Georgia Tech that is out to get nerds. If an organization like that did exist they would probably not last very long. One factor that I may have skipped over is that the times are different, being a college student in the early 1980s is completely different than being one right now. Nevertheless, I doubt that it was that much of a problem that the movie makes it out to be. I appreciated this movie as a comedy with a unique storyline, but it was not drop dead funny.

This movie definitely encapsulates the fantasy of nerds everywhere. The movie is based around a group of college students who aren’t exactly the cool kids on campus standing up for themselves against a group of jocks at their college who continuously push them around. Here at Tech us nerds do not have to worry about such issues, though, since the ratio of jock to nerd is astoundingly in our favor. But I am sure that this same story could appeal too many of us Techies in our daily lives outside of school. The story continues with the nerds creating a frat and eventually taking over the Greek System. This movie follows the same idea as Animal House with a few new twists. In Revenge of the Nerds the dean is in fact a nerd himself. He is in much the same situation as the loser students, though, because he gets pushed around by the football coach. Throughout the movie the nerds learn to stand up for themselves, and the dean learns this lesson right along with the students. This movie was corny but definitely still enjoyable. The overall message of not letting others push you around is a good one to take to heart. Watching the nerds defeat the jocks and take control of the Greek System was an inspiring sight for us all (not that I’m calling myself a nerd or anything…)
